Homeowners be aware: changing your WIFI connection can wreak havoc with your home security and camera systems.
Most newer home security systems and cameras use WIFI connections. If you make changes to your network, you may find your security devices or cameras are no longer working. There is an easy fix to this situation, though. Before you make any network changes, make sure you understand the basics of your home’s internet connection.
Router
A router is a device that connects to the internet. You may have received the router from your Internet Service Provider or you may have purchased it yourself. When IP cameras and certain security devices are installed, they are connected to either the WIFI on the router or connected directly with a network cable. IP Cameras may even have settings within the router that allow you to view your cameras remotely.
If you change your router or your Internet Service Provider, these connections and settings may be lost. If this happens, your cameras and/or security devices will be disconnected.
Access Point
An access point may be installed to extend your WIFI with in your home. Some of these units have their own access codes, which may have been used when setting up WIFI connected cameras or security devices. If these units are replaced or removed, your WIFI devices may need to be reconnected to a new unit.
Network Switch
A network switch is used to extend the number of wired connections on your router. If a wire that feeds an access point or a camera is disconnected it will impact those devices.
IP Address
The IP address is a number that is assigned to your router to access the internet. Occasionally, IP addresses change. For the most part, this has no impact on your system. However, if you have a camera system with remote viewing capability you will need to update your IP address or you will lose your connection. If this has occurred, simply go to any browser and type in “whatismyip.” This will show your current IP address. Compare it to the IP address in your remote viewing app. If different, simply edit your app with the new IP address.
