The Danger that CO Poses
The recent winter storm, dubbed Blair, knocked out power from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlatic. And there is more to come. Forecasters warn another storm will hit the Tri-State area this coming
weekend. If your home loses power, be aware of the very real danger that carbon monoxide poisoning (CO) poses. CO is produced by anything that uses gas, wood, coal, propane or oil. Home and water heaters, fireplaces, space heaters, generators and stoves all produce CO. According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 400 people in the U.S. die each year from unintentional CO poisoning not related to fires. Another 100,000 are treated at hospitals each year for CO poisoning.
Symptoms
Symptoms of CO poisoning vary and can include headache, weakness, dizziness, vomiting and loss of consciousness. Oftentimes, however, victims are overcome by the poisonous gas even before experiencing any symptoms.
If your power goes out, make sure you know the right way to use a gas-powered generator or portable heater. Remember, it only takes minutes for enough CO gas to build up indoors to kill you.
Never use a generator, grill or other gasoline, propane or charcoal-burning equipment inside of a house, garage, shed or on a porch. Keep the generator at least 20 feet away from any windows or entranceways. There are newer portable generators that have a safety feature designed to automatically shut off when high levels of CO are detected nearby.
Smoke and CO detectors save lives
Every home should have a CO detector on each level and outside of sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should be installed on each level as well, and inside each bedroom. Test these devices monthly.
