Learn how you security system transmits to your monitoring station
For years, residential and commercial security systems transmitted signals through telephone lines. Commonly called “POTS,” or plain old telephone service, these were regular phone lines, hard-wired to your telephone service provider’s connection point.
The security system’s panel was wired in a specific configuration, so that even if the phone line was in use it would take over the line and transmit any alarm or trouble signal.
Technology Changes
Today, many customers are switching phone providers as a cost-saving measure or because they do not need a landline. Unlike the older type telephone lines, some newer services are not compatible with security systems. Some newer systems use a different type of wiring or are wired differently. This can cause security system to become disconnect from the communication path.
Communication Options
At Delco Alarm Systems we offer many different options to provide communications for your security system. These options include hardwired and wireless Internet and cellular communicators.
Before You Switch Your Phone Service
Be sure to contact your security company before switching phone services. They will let you know what type of service will or will not work with your security system. Security professionals can also offer you alternative communication devices to make the transition to a new service provider seamless.
Is the Switch Cost-effective?
If you are switching phone service providers as a cost-saving measure, make sure the switch doesn’t add other costs to your monthly bill. Whether it is the cost of a service call to reconnect your security system to new wiring or adding an alternative form of communication, it can add up.
Unfortunately, not all phone service providers will ensure you that your security system is still communicating to the monitoring station when they make the switch. Always test your system to ensure it is communicating properly after having any work done on your phone system.
Your security system was installed to protect you and your family. Like anything else, these systems need routine maintenance to keep them in good working order.
