LANDSCAPING AS A CRIME DETERRENT
Our homes are where we are most comfortable and secure. To maintain that sense of security, many of us make the conscious decision to install a home alarm system. But oftentimes people ignore one important aspect of home security – landscaping. While a well-kept yard with trees, shrubs and plantings is desirable, too much of a good thing in the wrong location can provide a hiding place
for burglars or other unwanted people.
ELIMINATING HIDING PLACES
Shrubs and trees near ground-level windows are a favorite of burglars. What is best is to keep plantings below first-floor windows so they are visible from the street. Always make sure your casement windows are locked and unblocked by landscaping. Overgrown foliage also provides great cover for unwanted visitors. A tree limb that reaches close to a second-floor window is an easy way for a burglar to gain access to your home. Trimming overgrown bushes and trees is an easy security measure and will also improve the appearance of your home. If you really want some greenery close to your home, plant bushes with thorns or spikes, such as holly bushes. If a burglar is looking for a hiding place, they’ll almost always steer clear of greenery that scratch, sting
or itch.
LIGHTS AND CAMERAS
Motion sensor lights are also a great option. Burglars need to operate sight unseen. A well-lit area is a good deterrent. Place motion-sensor lights near key entry points, such as doors and ground-level windows. It’s also a good idea to check monthly to make sure that the lights on the exterior of your home are in working order. Automated lights that activate at specific times are also a good idea. Set up the timing of these lights when you are away to give the impression that someone is home.
SECURITY BASICS
Keeping your home secure often comes down to basic maintenance and common sense. Lock your doors and windows. Keep your lawn mowed. Empty your mailbox daily. Keep your garage door closed. If your home has an attached garage, make it a habit to keep the door into your home locked. Keep an eye out of suspicious activity near your neighbors homes and ask them to do the same. Watching out for each other is always a good idea. While a good home security system is a great investment, intelligent landscaping and maintenance of your home is a simple security option for
