It’s time to kick off spring cleaning and freshen up your home after a long winter.
Smoke, CO and Motion Detectors
While you are chasing down cobwebs, dust and grime, it’s also good time to check your home’s security devices to make sure they are in proper working condition. It just takes a few extra minutes to clean the cobwebs and dust from smoke detectors and security cameras. You also want to make sure all of your devices and window and door contacts are working the way they should. Before you do so, put your system on test with Central Station. Dust the smoke, motion and carbon monoxide detectors with a vacuum or canned air. Spiders and other bugs love to make a home in these devices and often cause problems. It’s also a good time to change the batteries. Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years.
Fire Extinguishers
As kitchens are the most used room in most homes, they can get grimy fast. While spiffing up your cabinets, floors and appliances, make sure to check your fire extinguishers. While most people have one in their kitchen, the National Fire Protection Association recommends you have a 2-A:10-B:C rated extinguisher on every level of your home. While most fire extinguishers last up to 12 years, it’s a good idea to replace them every 10 years.
Security cameras
Like upholstered furniture, bookcases and televisions, your security cameras also may need a little attention. Make sure the lenses of the cameras are clean and dust free. Dirt will reduce their effectiveness. It’s also a good time to check that your cameras are focused in the direction you intend, as wind, snow and rain can cause them to shift. Any video equipment that records data from your security system should also be cleaned of any dust or debris. While cleaning your home’s doors and windows, make sure you don’t knock off any contacts.
Fire and security systems are there to protect you, your family and your home. Regular maintenance will keep them operating effectively.
