Hurricane Season Prep
While the northeast U.S. has, so far, skirted a direct hit during the 2025 hurricane season, we’re not out of the woods yet.
This year, major named storms have fizzled or swung out to sea. Nonetheless, they still caused dangerous rip currents and areas of flooding along the coast, including the Jersey Shore. While sumer is officially over, we’re now in peak hurricane season. One only has to recall Superstorm Sandy, which hit on October 29, 2012. The storm killed hundreds of people and devastated New Jersey and the entire mid-Atlantic region.
It pays to be prepared in the event a dangerous storm approaches.
As a property owner, you have critical considerations to make when faced with the approach of a hurricane or a tropical storm.
The most important decision involves personal safety. If authorities order evacuations in your area, leave. Don’t gamble with your life. Property can always be replaced. If there is adequate warning, there are steps to take to secure your property and valuables. If you are evacuating the area, pack up necessities, such as prescription drugs, cash and important documents. And don’t forget your pets.
As much as you can, protect what you leave behind.
If you have a home security system, install a fresh battery. Then power down your system until after the storm. Most looters won’t be out in the middle of a hurricane. If an area has been hard-hit by a storm, those who failed to evacuate may break into your home
