Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love and romance, filled with chocolates,
flowers and romantic dinners. But for older adults who have lost a lifelong
companion, Valentine’s Day can be quite difficult.
A simple, heartfelt gift of time might be just the thing to bring a bit of joy to a
senior.
While you are planning a nice romantic Valentine’s Day with your
sweetheart, why not also brighten the day of an elderly relative or friend?
Brighten Someone’s Day
Take them out to lunch or spend the afternoon watching a classic romantic
film they might enjoy. If you can’t be there in person, even a note or a
phone call can show someone how much they mean to you.
The holiday celebration of love takes place during one of the coldest
months of the year. While those of us who enjoy being outdoors in winter
weather have it made, older folks oftentimes find it difficult to get around.
Streets and sidewalks can be slick and dangerous. Not being able to get
outside, for even a simple chore such as a trip to buy groceries, can be a
problem for them. While you are out running errands, why not take an older
relative or friend with you? Whether it be a ride to the store or shoveling a
sidewalk, your time and help will be greatly appreciated.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Do you have an elderly neighbor you don’t know? Why not reach out and
get to know them? You don’t need to become “besties.” But they will be
more likely to help you or ask for help during an emergency if you aren’t
strangers.
Most of us, older adults included, prefer to live in their own homes. But
being alone is not always ideal. If your mom or dad is living by themselves,
consider giving them a medical alert system for Valentine’s Day. Medical
alert systems will get immediate help and notify your family members in the
event of an emergency. The peace of mind these systems bring is a gift to
both you and your parent.
Delco Alarm Systems can help you choose the right system for your
individual needs. They will also teach you and your parent how to use the
system or device you have chosen. We are available 24/7 to answer any
questions you may have.
Valentine’s Day can be lonely for seniors, especially if they are widowed or
live alone. Share the love this Valentine’s Day by thinking of your older friends
and relatives.
