HAPPY SUMMER!
After the rainy, damp and cloudy spring we’ve had here in the northeast, it’s nice to finally see the sun! Enjoy your time outside soaking up the rays, and remember to do so safely.
NIX THE SUNBURN!
It’s well known that spending time outdoors is great for your physical and mental health. Going for a run, hike or swim is a great stress reducer. And who doesn’t enjoy a day at the beach or pool. Simply put, most people are happier when it’s sunny. Just remember that exposure to UV rays can increase your cancer risk. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen, wearing a hat and protective clothing and seeking our shady spots will help reduce that risk. Unprotected sun exposure also causes photoaging – wrinkles, age spots and saggy skin. Who wants that! Just remember to reapply sunscreen after sweating or swimming. And don’t forget the sunglasses to avoid eye damage caused by the sun’s rays.
WATER SAFETY
As noted, going to the beach or pool to stay cool and have fun is, for many, a big part of summer fun. But remember, water can be deadly. Drowning is the leading cause of death of children ages 1 to 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drownings are also the second leading cause of preventable death in all children through age 15. All children should learn to swim. Period. Learning to swim dramatically reduces the risk of drowning but doesn’t negate it. Young children are inquisitive and have no fear of the water. A child can easily slip under the water and drown – even with adults present. It is important to note, however, the risk of drowning increases when children have exposure to water without adult supervision.
If you own a pool, you are responsible for the safety of everyone who is on your property. Adequate fencing, with self-closing and self-latching locks on gates – is required by law. You should also install an alarm on pool gates, which will sound if a gate has been opened for a few seconds. Pool alarms are available that sound if the surface of the pool water is disturbed. Automatic pool covers are also an excellent way to keep children, pets and other intruders out of your pool while it’s not in use. Supervise your children near water. They need your undivided attention. If you’d like more

BIKE SAFETY
Bicycling is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. Before you head out, make sure you understand the rules of the road and take some simple safety precautions. All riders, children and adults, should wear an approved safety helmet. In most jurisdictions, it is the law. Ride with traffic on the far right-side of the roadway and follow the same traffic rules as
motorized vehicles, with few exceptions. Teach your children the proper arm signals to use when riding. Make sure your children know to look and listen before making turns and to watch
out for pedestrians, other cyclists and stationary objects as they ride along. Check that your children are wearing clothing that makes them visible to other drivers and always know where they are headed before they go out. The National Safety Council has some other tips to help cyclists stay safe while enjoying a ride.
The folks at Delco Alarm Systems hope you and your family have a wonderful and safe summer.
