As the year comes to a close, many of us gather with friends and family to share good times and fond memories. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or simply the Winter Solstice, remember those who might be spending the holidays alone. Consider sharing your celebrations with them. And make sure to do it safely.
The holiday season can be hectic. Between work, school, shopping, holiday concerts and parties, some things inevitably get ignored. Don’t letsafety be one of them. Rushing out the door? Don’t leave without locking up. That includes windows and garage doors. Remind your children to lock up when they arrive home from school. Arm your home security system when leaving and
overnight.
Nearly half of all home fires in December are caused by holiday candles. Dry Christmas trees, space heaters too close to combustibles and extension cords are also to blame for many house fires during the winter months. Make sure to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly.
While Santa is welcome to slip down our chimneys on Christmas Eve, make sure your home doesn’t provide easy access to unwanted intruders. Some simple home safety precautions can stop a bad guy from getting easy access to your family’s home and property.
The winter months can be joyous, despite the short days and long, dark nights. Follow the lead of the Scandinavian people, where the sun only rises above the horizon for a few hours each day. Spend time outside each day. It’s good for the soul. Enjoy the indoors by safely lighting candles and fires in the fireplace. After decorating your home for the holidays, wrap
yourself up in a cozy blanket and sip a warm drink. We’d also like to suggest making a donation in the spirit of the holidays. A donation to a local food bank, toy or coat drive or the Red Cross will truly help a family in need this holiday season. Try to keep the holiday spirit alive through the rest of the winter months and have a happy and healthy new year!
