According to the National Fire Protection Association, half of the home fires in December are caused by holiday candles. Dry Christmas trees, space heaters too close to combustibles and extension cords are also to blame for many house fires during the winter months. Make sure to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly.
The American Red Cross has some holiday tips to keep you and your family safe this winter: Check all holiday light cords to ensure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together — no more than three per extension cord. Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Ensure outside decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard. Look for the fire-resistant label when buying an artificial tree. Keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat. Never use electric lights on metallic trees. If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and keep it watered. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off. Don’t light the fireplace if hanging stockings on the mantel.
The winter months can be joyous, despite the short days and long, dark nights. Follow the lead of the Scandinavian people, where the sun only rises above the horizon for a few hours each day. Enjoy the winter months instead of merely enduring them till spring. Try to spend time outside daily instead of binge-watching t.v. shows. It’s good for your soul. Enjoy the indoors by safely lighting candles and fires in the fireplace. After decorating your home for the holidays, wrap yourself up in a cozy blanket and sip a warm drink.
