Cellular Sunset
In approximately one year , both Verizon and ATT will be shutting down their CDMA/3G networks and upgrading to 4G/5G. The Verizon sunset is scheduled for December 2020. The ATT sunset is December 2021. As of those dates any cellular device that uses those networks will no longer be operational.
How would the cellular sunset impact my security system?
Over the past few years, more and more consumers were moving away from phone lines in their homes. In order to keep their security systems communicating many consumers switched to either cellular or IP communicators. Cellular communicators are also used when a new security company takes over a security system from another provider
How do I know what cellular device I have?
If your device is more than two years old, it is on the the CDMA/3G network and needs to be replaced. The other way to determine what network it is on is to contact your security provider. They should have a record of your device and the network it is using..
How do I upgrade my cellular device?
Over the next few months, your security provider should be contacting you to review how you should upgrade or switch your communication options. The newer cellular communicators will be compatible with the newer services being provided by Verizon and ATT. You may also have the option of switching to an IP Communicator depending on your present security system.
Why was I not made aware of the cellular sunset when the cellular communicator was installed?
Just as with your cell phone, security companies are at the mercy of the cellular providers. We don’t know, nor can we predict, when a company may change something on their network which would require installed devices to be upgraded. We are currently working with our providers to make the switch to the new service as easy and inexpensive as we can to our customers.
In the next few months, Delco Alarm Systems will be notifying their customers of the available options for their systems.
