ARE THERE GAPS IN YOUR HOME SECURITY?
Keeping your family safe is your number one priority, so you’ve installed a home security system. Unfortunately, even the most sophisticated security system won’t be as effective if there are
gaps that can be exploited by criminals.
Forgetting to lock doors and windows.
Burglars want to get in and out of a house quickly. An unlocked door gives them easy access. In mere minutes a bad guy could ransack your home and be back out with your valuables. Not to mention the danger this poses to anyone home at the time.
Letting strangers inside of your home.
Absolutely do not let anyone inside of your home unless you know them or you have made a prior appointment. One of the biggest scams out there involves thieves posing as utility workers. Oftentimes they target elderly homeowners. Working in pairs, they’ll typically wear uniforms, flash IDs and say there is a problem with your water, cable or electric service. One bad guy will
distract you while the other burglarizes your home. Unless you have spoken with the utility company in advance and or have set up an appointment, don’t let anyone into your home.
Landscaping issues.
Your landscaping design could give a would-be burglar a nice place to hide. Keep bushes, grasses and other plantings close to your home trimmed. Tall plantings are often used by criminals who want to sneak up on your home without being seen. Also, keep your grass mowed. An unkempt lawn signals that you might be away from home.
Check your outdoor lights and security cameras monthly.
Make sure everything is working properly. Consider installing motion-sensor lights around access points to your home. Look to see if your security cameras are in good working order and are facing in the right direction.
Install quality locks.
Any good locksmith will tell you not to buy your locks from a big box store. Quality deadlocks provide the best security. Smart locks that use keypads instead of keys are good for families or
anyone who has a habit of losing their keys. Reinforce sliding glass doors with locking pins or barrier bars. Also, always change the locks when moving into a new home. One way to keep your home safe from intruders is to think like one. Ask yourself, ‘Where would I try to get in if I didn’t have a key?” Follow our suggestions, and most importantly, have a security system installed to make sure you have all of your bases covered.
